Women purse and Bags: Since when?

Women purse and Bags: Since when?

When did the first bag in history appear?

There is no doubt that since the beginning of humanity it was already present

Already the ancient prehistoric peoples drew pictographs and petroglyphs on the rock with figures and symbols in which they represented what life and customs were like.

Preserved until today, some of these cave art samples show images that show us a kind of bag hanging from the arm.

Is that a handbag?

Using the skin of animals to protect the body from inclement weather, they also used it to carry their food.

With the name of saddlebag, or saddlebags, it is designated a kind of bag made of leather that could be worn hanging from the shoulders, or tied to the belt, and it could be said that this is the origin of the bag that today decorates the outstanding artist Kutty Reyes for our FUSIÓN Foundation

The Origin of the Wallet and the feminine bag

There is no precision to say since when the bags exist because there are no reliable historical references with truth that allow us to state the date of its creation.

But it is demonstrable that the bag has a practical and masculine origin, quite far from the current decorative use and almost always associated with the feminine.

From its origins, human beings needed to carry some tools with them, and for that they created bags or covers made of animal leather. In the Bible they appear carried mainly by men and associated with shepherds.

Curiously, an excellent draftsman and chronicler Dutertre (1667), as well as Father Charles Plummer (1693) show us how the Caribbean women, inhabitants of the Antilles, showed their coquetry when using their small handbags or handbags.

And the same is described by Jean Baptiste Du Tertre, a Dominicus missionary in l'Histoire Générale des Antilles.

Only in the Middle Ages did the bag appear as a decorative item.
They were worn tied at the waist and could be moved from one garment to another. These "portable pockets" were decorated with stones and embroidery, depending on the social status of the wearer.

Bags in the 21st Century

In the following centuries, women's garments began to leave aside the layers of clothing and fit more closely to the female silhouette.

This caused the famous "pockets" tied at the waist to be left aside, to make way for handbags.

Already in the 20th century, this accessory gained strength and designers began to give it greater importance: Chanel created the renowned "Chanel 2.55" design, whose name refers to the date of its creation, February 1955. Other examples of famous handbag designs they are the ones inspired by celebrities such as the Alexa bag or the Del Rey bag created by Mulberry.

Now in this 2022 the FUSIÓN Foundation, interconnects the bag with art and with the complicity of the Igneri / Art and Archeology Foundation, unites two national artists to produce exclusive and original bags.

Kutty Reyes, notable visual artist stamps his original designs on the bags and Thimo Pimentel contributes his "ceramic guanines" that seem to have the magical, healing and good luck powers of the "behiques", shamans and Caribbean sorcerers, Ciguayos and Tainos, first inhabitants of this magical and unusual island.

FUSIÓN / IGNERI bags stand out as true works of art and an original and innovative contribution to fashion and art.
